Horrific

 So, last august, this happened.

I have a relative that thinks racism against whites is worse than racism against minorities. How many of these sorts of stories do you think it would take to convince them?

Happy Draw Muhammad Day Everyone!

I decided to give my Muhammad a bit of an action pose. He's running, arms outstretched.

Unemployment in the Second Great Depression

A history lesson going back to 1935 when Roosevelt created unemployment benefits and extending to last June, when the Republicans blocked extension of long term unemployment benefits for the "spoiled" "hobos", "animals" and "drug addicts" that are the unemployed.

Dog Breeding

If you love animals and can't stand to see them in pain, this movie will break your heart, but it may change your mind about pedigree dogs.

I am a moral naturalist. It's wrong to cause pain, even indirectly. Creating a life that will be lived in agony is wrong. For those that object to abortion, I hope this at least gives you pause. I understand for some people it would be too painful to make that decision, too painful to "kill" your "child" (whether these terms apply is still debated, but science is currently on the other side). But given severe enough defects, there is clearly pain being experienced later on by something that is demonstrably a real person. Shouldn't that weigh into the decision?

White People are the Real Victims of Racism?

What can I say?

Scaring Old White People

It's very disturbing to live in the world where these sorts of tactics still work. Even scarier to be raised/surrounded by family that are taken in by them.

Rachel Maddow on Fox News

A couple reasons why Fox is not the same as other news channels, and why Fox and MSNBC are not "two sides of the same coin."

2010 Republican Candidates

And another one from last year. My stepdaughter's bi and a teenager, so gay and abortion rights have been hot-button issues for me lately. These are the people that are going to be taking away her right to gay-marry or have an abortion one day. Or with the way things have been going since 2010, they'll be the ones that take away her access to Planned Parenthood's contraception and HPV/Cervical Cancer screenings.

This one is a little old. But I thought it was worth sharing. If you're familiar with the Westboro Baptist Church (Fred Phelps family), you're no doubt aware how wacky they are. Here's an interview with Shirley Phelps, in which the interviewer (Julie Banderas) shows that mainstream Evangelicals can be just as wacky.

The interview doesn't start until halfway through, but it's a thing of beauty. If you want to show an audience how crazy the subject of your interview is, you need to stay a lot more composed than Julie Banderas did. Compare with the well-known Katie Couric/Sarah Palin interviews, in which Couric is polite, civil, and inquisitive, giving Palin enough rope to hang herself. With someone this crazy it should have been even easier. All you need to do is give them a platform to speak.
